mBC, also referred to as advanced or stage IV breast cancer, indicates that the cancer has spread to distant organs. As unfortunately there is no cure available yet, the goal of treatment is to extend life, delay progression of the disease and help each person maintain the best quality of life for as long as possible.
The challenges of mBC
Many women diagnosed with mBC worry about the impact their disease will have on their families. They report feelings of fear, anxiety, isolation and depression as a result of their diagnosis, as well as uncertainty regarding the future and fear of dying.
Coming to terms with mBC
Understandably, being diagnosed with mBC can be a devastating experience. And despite a growing number of women suffering from mBC, their voices are often missing from public discussion about cancer – which focuses mostly on the more positive story of early breast cancer.
However, there are several sources of support available to help women and their loved ones cope with the difficult emotions that it can cause. These vary by location, but include professionals (such as psycho-oncologists, cancer charities, social workers and counsellors) along with peer support groups.
